A fox breaks into a zoo and kills 25 flamingos.

Staff were distraught after a wild fox sneaked into a zoo and mauled 25 flamingos to death.

The atrocity was discovered during normal checks at the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington, DC on Monday morning (May 2).

The zoo stated staff arrived to see the slaughter and discovered a fox, which escaped shortly after.

Before launching on his rampage, the predator is reported to have gotten through a baseball-sized hole in the strong mesh netting 

A Northern pintail duck was also killed, according to the zoo, while three other flamingos were injured and are being treated.

The zoo's director, Brandie Smith, said: "This is a terrible loss for us and all animal lovers.
